Sasha asked:

About two months ago I noticed two pairs of my favourite jeans were a bit tight on me. I did have a very bad diet which mostly consisted of milk and chocolate. But after seeing a bit of bulge hang over my favourite jeans I decided to do something about it. I now eat things like brown bread, and salads and cut back enormously on chocolate. I got an ab toner belt, started taking diet pills and started walking a lot and sometimes go for jogs. I can’t understand it.I’m 18 and have always been pretty thin. Since I started this I gained 4 pounds and I have only two paris of jeans left that actually fit me. It’s making me feel terrible. My boyfriend is also doing all this to lose his weight, but it seems to be working for him, and he’s even a smoker. Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong? And if they have any suggestions to lose weight around my stomach and my hips. I’ve also been doing a few crunches, but my main problem is my hip area which seems to be a lot worse than my pudgy stomach.

it sounds like your metabolism is changing. when you are young you can eat whatever you want and gain nothing. as you get older though, your body changes and your metabolism slows.

if you exercise more and take vitamins, you can boost your metabolism and this shoud help with the weight gain. maybe you could get a trainer or start running. that may help with your hips and midsection. idk if this is your problem but it sounds that way to me.

    hope i helped some. =]

When women get older their hips do tend to get wider to support bearing children. It’s genetics and it’s tough to fix. If it’s any consolation and your not worried about being unhealthy, men seem to be more attracted to women with wider hips. I would continue jogging and walking. There are several sites available which will tell you what exercises to do to work specifically on the hips. I go to a gym and there’s this fun machine that does hip abductions and adductions, which I enjoy. If you’ve started birth control recently then there’s a possibility that the hormones from the pill could be the cause of your weight gain and I would discuss that possibility with your physician if you do happen to be on birth control. As for the dieting, just eat healthy starting with fruit and high fiber foods is a real good way to help the body burn fat. Try not to worry too much about filling out a little bit, curves are an asset in my opinion, but if the weight gain starts to get out of control with no explanation talk to a doctor about the possibility that you might have metabolism issues or something else. I hope you start to feel better about yourself, remember that looking good is 90% about being confident and feeling good.

I don’t want to get extremely personal, but have you started a new method of birth control within the past few months? It can increase your appetite and cravings for certain foods (like chocolate) and can also make you retain water.

First of all if you wanna lose weight you can’t just switch out a few things for healthier things and cut back on one or two things you have to do an all around conversion of the way you eat. Such as the amount of food you eat and how high in fat it is. For example, you could cut down on your food portions and eat low fat and lean foods.

Also the most effective way would be to ACTUALLY EXERCISE and it has to become routine or else the amount of food you eat will just add on the pounds since you are not working them off. For your ab belt thing, just do actual crunches instead of that belt because the belt does not get rid of the fat it just stimulates the muscles. So in a way if your muscles are growing but your not burning fat it will add even more pounds. You don’t even have to do only crunches you can also do leg lifts and other things to tighten your abs.

As for your hips instead of walking or most of the time use the time that you would be walking and go running or jogging which ever would better suit you. By jogging or running you basically double the calories you are burning. You’re young and energetic so replacing walking with running is NOT a big step and it’s a better use of the time. Just be aware if you want to make this part of your lifestyle, which is highly recommended, Just know that when exercising you have to step it up by the amount of time or the intensity after a while since your body will adapt to the workout routine and it will basically be less effective.
